Applicants must be California residents and U.S. citizens, permanent residents or eligible non-citizens. Applicants must also submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 2 of each year. A certified grade point average (GPA) report must be filed with the California Student Aid Commission. Public high schools and public charter schools automatically submit all current senior year students' certified GPAs to the Commission, unless the parent or student has opted out. Additionally, some colleges automatically submit their students' certified GPAs. However, applicants should confirm with their school that GPAs are being filed automatically. Applicants must pursue a course of study that leads directly to an associate's or bachelor's degree, or qualifies for transfer from a community college to a bachelor's degree program. Cal Grant awards do not need to be paid back.
