College Planning Calendar: August 2024

As a new academic year approaches, it's time to make a plan of action for you and your students. Use our August College Planning Calendar to get started!

August means it’s time for students and counselors to gear up for another academic year—and whether that makes you happy or sad, there is a lot to look forward to! Seniors will be starting the college admission process in earnest, juniors have important AP classes and standardized tests to prepare for, sophomores can up their academic and extracurricular game, and ninth graders are embarking on a brand-new journey starting high school. The end of the summer is a perfect time for students in all grades to set a solid college prep plan for success—and our College Planning Calendar is the perfect tool to help them map everything out.

General college prep and planning

  • 9th grade: It’s almost time for an exciting new academic adventure! Make sure incoming freshmen are prepared with Our Best Advice for Your First Year of High School, covering everything from clubs to grades to early college prep and more.
  • 10th grade: Sophomores can also prepare for the year with their own survival guide, Our Best Advice for Sophomore Year of High School, featuring tips on avoiding the sophomore slump, studying for the PSAT, starting the scholarship search, and more.
  • 11th grade: Junior year is when the college process starts to get real. Help your students think about standardized tests, brainstorm college essay ideas, and formulate a list of colleges they’d like to visit with Our Best Advice for Junior Year of High School.
  • 12th grade: This is it—the last year of high school and when your students will hopefully make it into their dream colleges! Our Best Advice for Senior Year of High School walks students through applications, essays, scholarships, standardized tests, and so much more to help them prepare for their next academic journey.

Month-long observances and events

  • National Family Fun Month: Before getting too wrapped up in back-to-school planning, students should take some time to have fun with their families before everyone gets busy again.
  • National Back to School Month: We’ve already been talking about it—but August is officially National Back to School Month! It’s the perfect time for students to start getting ready for a new academic year and all the excitement and challenges ahead.

I discovered CollegeXpress while embarking on my college search journey as an excited—but scared and way confused—high schooler without a counselor or college-bound sibling to give me advice. Let me tell you, I’m so glad that I stumbled on this community! CollegeXpress helped me find potential colleges and keep application deadlines straight. It gave me a great list of scholarships, and the blogs and emails made me feel like I wasn’t going it alone. Almost three years later and with freshman year of college down, I still love the CollegeXpress vibe so much that I’m writing for them. I’d recommend this site to anyone!

CollegeXpress has helped me with the college application process. The tips and tricks for important essays were so helpful. I also gained useful knowledge about college life. Even though I’m fully online, CollegeXpress has helped me develop a sense of how college is in person. The experiences from college students that were featured on their Instagram page have shown the good, the bad, and the “secret” life on campus from a reliable perspective. Not to mention, they relieved my feelings of anxiety about the workload. I can now understand how it can be stressful, but it takes self-control and willpower to get assignments completed on time and with quality.

I love the site CollegeXpress; it has been very helpful finding colleges and getting them to send me information. It has also been very, very helpful with finding tons of scholarships. Also, I told many of my friends about it and they love it as well!

My favorite part of CollegeXpress is the 800+ lists which have all kinds of hard-to-find information. These lists are helpful when I’m creating college lists, and I also use them to give students a feel for a particular college or university.

CollegeXpress has helped me in many ways. For one, online searches are more organized and refined by filtering scholarships through by my personal and academic interests. Due to this, it has made searching for colleges and scholarships significantly less stressful. As a student, life can already get stressful pretty quickly. For me, it’s been helpful to utilize CollegeXpress since it keeps all of my searches and likes together, so I don’t have to branch out on multiple websites just to explore scholarship options.
