The School of Health Sciences provides an education that goes far beyond what’s traditional with over 45 graduate academic programs. Throughout your education, you’ll be a respected member of the health care team and make a difference before you even finish your program. The School is at the forefront of health care discovery and innovation, and we bring that culture to the classroom to create an unparalleled health science education. The Alix School of Medicine
The Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine is a national medical school unified by a single innovative curriculum. Educational opportunities are offered across three unique campuses in Arizona, Florida, and Minnesota. As an integral part of Mayo Clinic, Alix School of Medicine students learn from renowned medical experts who provide specialty care to nearly 1.4 million patients per year. You’ll receive outstanding integrated clinical and research training and acquire the skills to be a leader in an ever-changing and challenging health care environment. Your medical training will include access to the latest advances in medical technology and simulation in state-of-the-art research and patient care facilities. 

Through the MD program, you’ll experience a dynamic learning environment, world-class faculty, and a transformative curriculum for a truly unique educational opportunity where you’ll join in our mission to put the needs of patients first. The focus on clinical experiences that expand upon classroom learning is built into our learning model:

• Pre-clerkship Phase: Students study foundational sciences and pathophysiology while participating in on-campus clinical settings and simulation centers along with community organizations that serve patients.
• Clerkship Phase: Students rotate through the core disciplines of internal medicine, surgery, psychiatry, pediatrics, obstetrics & gynecology, family medicine, neurology, and emergency medicine.
• Post-clerkship Phase: Includes a sub-internship, social medicine rotation, several rotations at Mayo Clinic, and rotations at external institutions in areas of choice and preparation experiences for residency.
• Academic Enrichment: Enrichment is available throughout the curriculum and allows for customization and flexibility for students to pursue their educational and career goals, including selective research experiences, unique clinicals, and dual-degree options.

The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences
At the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, our students learn from unique training experiences at a top academic medical center to become biomedical scientists, educators, and innovators whose leadership will change the world. Our PhD program, taught by scientists who are leaders in their fields, has a long history of preparing students for careers as competitive, independent medical investigators—conducting innovative research from discovery science to translational research to patient care. Through this program, you’ll acquire a broad expertise in biomedical science with the opportunity to go deeper into your primary area of research interest. Choose from eight biomedical science specialty tracks with diverse research opportunities:

• Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
• Biomedical Engineering & Physiology
• Clinical & Translational Science
• Immunology
• Molecular Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics
Neuroscience
• Regenerative Sciences
• Virology & Gene Therapy

It’s recommended for applicants to have prior research experience and completed coursework in biology, chemistry, physics, and calculus. Additional coursework in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, and physiology is encouraged. Applicants for the Biomedical Engineering & Physiology track are encouraged to have courses in quantitative science and engineering. A bachelor’s degree in Biological or Physical Sciences from an accredited institution is preferred but not required. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. (An English language proficiency requirement may be applicable.)

The MD–PhD Medical Scientist Training program educates students to meet the demands of a career as a physician-scientist. By combining MD and PhD training, we prepare students to be leaders in clinical medicine and scientific research to significantly impact the future of medicine and science. Our graduates go on to be highly successful in their respective fields of clinical medicine, research, medical education, and leadership. Research experience programs include:
• The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF): Immerse yourself in a research lab and work alongside established scientists to build your skills in this 10-week summer program for college students who are entering their junior or senior year and are interested in pursuing a PhD or MD-PhD program.
• Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP): Develop your research experience in this one-to-two-year program that focuses on strengthening the research skills of individuals from underrepresented backgrounds who have recently earned a bachelor’s degree in a biomedical science discipline.
• Graduate Research Employment Program (GREP): Distinguish yourself as a developing scientist in this short-term opportunity designed to provide you with one to two years of research experience before applying to medical or graduate school. (A paid salary and Mayo Clinic benefits are provided.)
