Fun Facts

  • In 1841, Oberlin College became the first college to grant degrees to women. It was also the first college to grant a bachelor's degree to an African American woman, doing so in 1862.
  • Charles Martin Hall, who developed the process of reducing aluminum to the super-thin sheets we know today, was inspired to capitalize on the metal after hearing a lecture on aluminum from his Oberlin College professor Frank Fanning Jewett.
